Welcome to the UK Bearded Collie Club

Champ Show Judges

Dr David J Anderton (Ardensax)

From a small pool at Ardensax of 6 Beardies over 29 years, starting with Padworth Freya, who gained stud book qualification, ambition was fulfilled by breeding Ch Ardensax Angelina.

At his first open show (1986) and Championship show (2000) judging appointments, Labooshar Lore Lord, later Ch LL, and Ch Potterdale Prophet at The National Working and & Pastoral Breeds (2000) were BOB & BIS respectively. He has also awarded Challenge Certificates in Bearded Collies at the Scottish Kennel Club (2002), Windsor Dog Show (2005), the Nederlanse (Dutch) Beared Collie Club Show (2005), Special Klub for Bearded Collie (Sweden) (2006), SCBCC (2007) & Three Counties Championship Show (2008).

He was pleased when Ch Pattishawl Preview received BOB and Pastoral Group 1 at Crufts (2007) after having awarded her, her first CC at Windsor Championship Show (2005).

Dave is a past Chairman of the East Anglian Branch of the Bearded Collie Club.

Marian Appleby (Diotima)

I’ve lived with longhaired dogs since I was 11 and discovered Beardies in 1972. Our first Beardie came from John & Betty Meyrick (Nigella) in 1973 and in 1974 we bought a bitch from Tine Bowen (Blumberg). Ch Blumberg Diotima Steel JW became the foundation bitch of Diotima Beardies. From Ella descend all Diotimas and we now have an unbroken line of six generations of bitch Champions. We bred Ch Diotima Sea Wolf at Ramsgrove, top Beardie 2004 and own Ch Brnriga Gift Wrapped for Diotima JW, top Beardie 2005. Am & UK Ch Diotima Always on My Mind became the sixth Beardie owned/bred by Diotima to win a CC at Crufts.

I first judged in the 1970’s, approved to award CC’s in 1987. I have also judged in Sweden, Holland, Belgium, Finland, Switzerland, Canada & the USA.

I was Membership Secretary for the Southern Branch of the BCC, then SCBCC Membership Secretary for 11 years from its foundation & Secretary from 1991 -1996.

Graham Atkins (Snikkles)

I have been involved in Beardies since 1976 showing under the Labooshar affix, having success with a Beardie from the late Maureen Reader (Tamevalley0 making up Ch Tamevalley Folk Lyric of Labooshar, who from her first litter produced Ch. Labooshar Lore Lord. A second Tamevalley dog was also purchased & won 2 RCC’sa & produced winning offspring as a stud dog.

Under the Snikkles affix I campaigned Ch Kelham Hot Gossip to her title & Coalacre Cruisin to Snikkles (2CC’s). From this mating I am currently campaigning 2 Snikkles puppies with some success, and another boy from Rosies first litter.

I have awarded CC’s since 1992 & have judged on numerous occasions in the UK & Europe and once a Club show in Australia. Recent judging included the Euro Show in Belgium (2007), a Club show in Holland (bitches) 2008 and in 2009 Crufts (dogs).

Margaret Buckley (Holtend)

I had my first Beardie over 30 years ago, Swinford Sky Flyer CDEX UD open: Ch Brambledale Balthazar x Ch Charncroft Country Maid. She is still only 4 generations away from my 2 year old. All Holtend Beardies are directly descended from her & have been bred very much with form & function, type & liveability in mind.

I bred my first litter in 1980 & have been judging since 1983. I judged at SCBCC Championship show in 1990 (bitches) & again in 2009 (dogs). I have awarded CC’s on several other occasions & also CACIBs in Germany where I have also judged working tests. I have campaigned 2 Beardies to their titles: Ch Holtend Chiffchaff & Ch Ellymore Starlet of Holtend. I qualified my first Beardie in Working Trials & competed more recently in Open Obedience.

I believe in maintaining the versatile Beardie that can adapt itself to its owners wishes whether it be in the Show, Obedience or Agility ring or at Working Trials or as the ultimate companion at home.

I work as a GP specialising in the use of acupuncture for musculoskeletal problems, keeping humans ‘fit for function’

Chris Burscough (Kilfinan)

Tony and I have owned and exhibited Bearded Collies for 22 years. In that time we have qualified 16 for the Stud Book, 11 of which were home- bred. 4 became Champions with 1 holding a dual title. In addition we have bred numerous CACIB’s, CC and Res. CC winners, 3 have achieved Irish titles and 1 his Canadian title.

I have been privileged to have judged 3 Breed Open Shows and 156 classes of Beardies since 1994. I have also judged classes of Shelties, Belgian Shepherds, PMD’s, Skyes, Rough’s, OES and Border Collies plus large variety classes at Matches.  I am on the A3 lists of the BCC, BCC of Scotland, Midshires, NEBCOL and Eastern BCC , the B list of  the Skye Terrier Club and Portuguese Water Dog Club.

I enjoy judging, consider it an honour and view it as an opportunity to gain further valuable experience.

Sheila Burditt (Mabursh)

Our first Beardie came to live with us in 1972 as a companion & we have enjoyed their company ever since. I began judging in 1982 & have had the honour of assessing our lovely breed on numerous occasions gaining approval to award CC’s in 2000.

Malcolm & I have owned 10 Beardies, mostly homebred, from the 7 litters born at Mabursh, we campaigned 1 to Champion, 1CC winner, 1 RCC winner & 5 Stud Book qualifiers.

Founder members of Midshires BCC, I was for many years a committee member & believe in putting something back into the breed that we adore as they give us so much.

I am still exhibiting here in Spain, having gained a CAC recently with our youngster & if not in the ring, showing or judging, you can find me discussing the breed with like minded folks from the sidelines, always willing to learn.

Sue Carter (Woodacre)

Sue has loved dogs for as long as she can remember, her first dog being a Spanial who lived to the grand ol’ age of 17 years.

She has owned and showed Bearded Collies since 1980 and her first Beardie ‘Woodland Merle’ won the Woodacres’ their first CC in 1985.

In 1988 ‘Moonhills Rosy Glow of Woodacre’ joined the household, winning 1CC and 2 RCC’s. She was the mother of ‘Woodacre Wynsome Blue’ (4 RCC’s) and the first homebred Woodacre Champions ‘ Ch Woodacre Wynter Knight’ (7CC’s, 7 RCC’s) and Ch Woodacre Wynter Star at Geliland’ (3CC’s, 6 RCC’s). Sue currently shows Bendale Wynter Thyme of Woodacre’ (1RCC) and her latest Champion (co-owned with her daughter Jane Palmer), Ch Nellbrook Mystical Knight of Woodacre’ (3 CC’s 2 RCC’s).

Sue’s first judging appointment was in 1983, awarding CC’s in 1998. She has judged mainly in the UK but has held appointments in the Netherlands and America.

Sue has held the position of Treasurer for the Bearded Collie Club for the last 10 years and feels it is rewarding to put something back into the wonderful world of Beardies.

Ian Copus  (Rallentando)

As a child I showed Afghan Hounds and Miniature Pinschers and in 1979 I purchased my first  Bearded Collie from Pat and Fed Randall.  The next year I bought Kimrand Carousel, who became an English Champion.  I bred a few litters in England in the 1980’s under the Rallentando prefix, producing an English Champion and several Champions in Canada, USA and Europe.  I emigrated with my family to Canada in 1990 and continued to breed, judge and show the Beardies, producing several Champions in the USA and Canada. I have produced Best in Specialty and Group winning Beardies in both the USA and Canada.

I began judging Bearded Collies at Championship level in 1990 and have judged Breed Club Championship Shows in England, Holland and the USA, including the USA National Specialty. I have also judged at the World Winners Show and in Australia.

Bob Cross (Tarskavaig)

Having been brought up with dogs all my life, Pekingese in particular, the Kelvin Hall was always an annual trip in those days as a relative also showed Airedales. However, in 1966 I bought a Labrador as a pet and a very good friend and work colleague who showed Dalmatians suggested that I show her. My first show was a Gundog show and she got Reserve Best Puppy in Show – I was absolutely hooked. My introduction to Beardies was when Major Logan first appeared at Open Shows in Scotland and I thought then what a lovely breed they were. Little did I know that they would soon become a major part of my life. But I was purely a Labrador man – until I met Maggie and we got together and my interest in the breed grew and grew. I was a founder member of the Bearded Collie Club of Scotland and during the ensuing years was its Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary and Show Manager and am presently a Committee Member and sit on the Judges Sub-Committee. I was deeply involved in the formation of Kirkintilloch, Lenzie & DCS, was Vice-Chairman and Show Manager and am now its Secretary, making sure there is always a good set of Beardie Classes for a Specialist Judge to enjoy. I first awarded CCs in 1982 to Skye Terriers and though I first judge Beardies in 1978 at the Scottish Breeds it was some 10 years later that I first awarded CCs at the Scottish Kennel Club. Like Maggie I have also judged them in Sweden and Australia. I would consider it a great honour to judge at the BCC Championship Show.

Beverley Cuddy (Dearbolt)

I got my first Beardie in 1973, Champion Edenborough Sweet Lady and she was the foundation for the Dearbolt line of Beardies, which did quite well in the ring as well as being much-loved pets.

Together with my late parents, we bred fewer than 10 litters - the last of our homebred dogs dying about five years ago. As a family we became very involved in the Bearded Collie Club, I was Secretary in my 20s and it is my design that is still used as the main BCC logo. (Not many people know that!) I have been the Editor and Publisher of Dogs Today magazine for the past 19 years where Beardies have appeared as often as I could find a space! I have a beautiful Beardie at my side once more, Ramsgrove The Wild Child at Dearbolt, who I was delighted to discover goes back to my very first Beardie. I haven't judged in the UK for quite a few years but always do take it very seriously, putting soundness and fitness for purpose highest on my list. The more I learn about other breeds, the more I celebrate what we have in this precious and ancient breed. While I no longer actively show, I do think that dog showing plays a major part in selecting which genes in a generation survive and as such I think judging is a very serious and responsible job that needs to performed with altruism and consideration wherever possible.

Kim Evans (Treebeard)

I have enjoyed owning Beardies for 25 years, and had the honour and pleasure of judging for over ten years, including three Club Show appointments at Open level, been involved in Rescue and for the first eighteen years held an office with one or other of the breed clubs

With my husband I have owned eight Beardies in that time, one I campaigned to champion, one a CC winner and three stud book qualifiers.  We have occasionally bred a litter, five in twenty five years to date and been entrusted with puppies, rescues and adults by others from time to time.

I love this breed and watching Beardies, from the ringside or when permitted the middle of the ring is the best way I can think of spending an enjoyable and thought provoking day.

Peter Fox (Bushblades)

I first became involved in Bearded Collies in 1988, when we bought our first Beardie, Beth, as a pet. Then like so many others, we were persuaded to enter one show by the breeder. Of course we got “hooked” and have shown ever since. Our second Beardie, Orora’s Silver Mica was bought with showing in mind and her half sister, Orora’s Marcasite, soon followed. All of our Bushblades Beardies descend from these two special girls.

Although we have only bred 12 litters we have bred three Champions, Ch B. Site and Sound (Top Junior 1995), her daughter Ch B.Soundin’ Out & B. Tranquil Skies at Kayanarra. We have also bred four other Beardies that have gained Reserve CC’s, and one other, B. Transaction with 2RCC’s and a CC who was top Puppy in 2007 & top Junior in 2008.

I started judging Bearded Collies in 1992 and have enjoyed judging ever since, awarding CC’s for the first time in 2005. I was honoured to be invited to judge Bitches at the 40th anniversary show of the Netherlands Bearded Collie Club and I have also judged in Germany & Sweden.

Bob Gregory (Spotartan)

He first became involved in the dog scene in 1965, and during his showing career, made up many Champions, all home bred, in both Dalmations and Tibetan Terriers.

He began judging in 1974 & first awarded CC’s in 1979, since which time he has been approved to award CC’s in 30 breeds in the Utility, Working, Pastoral & Hound Groups and now awards & BIS plus the Utility, Pastoral & Working Groups at Championship shows. In 2005 he had the pleasure of judging the Utility Group at Crufts.

He has judged at Championship show level in countries including Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Russia, America, South Africa, Asia and all Scandinavia & Europe.

From his records he has judged over 11,000 classes, 58,000 dogs and 180 BIS all breeds, & in what spare time he has, he is a K.C. Accredited trainer in Conformation & Movement and Hands on Assessment, and is the Co-ordinator for the Pastoral Group JDP and is the Chairman of Manchester Dog Show Society.

Rosie Haywood (Binbusy)

I have owned Beardies for over 30 years and up until my Husband, Steve died in May 2000 was very active in the Breeding and Showing of our lovely Breed. I was also Treasurer of the Bearded Collie Club for 13 years.

Together we bred over 20 litters and provided the foundation stock for a number of successful Breeders both in the UK and Abroad. Nowadays I am content to share my home with my remaining two Beardies, Ellie and Whoopie and to continue with my judging career.

I first judged Beardies in 1982 and gave my first set of tickets at the Welsh KC Show in August 1988 – the same day Ch.Binbusy Cadence was whelping her first litter so not ideal timing! Over the years I have judged many of the major UK Championship Shows and Club Shows and judged the Bitches at Crufts in 2004. I have also judged Beardies many times abroad all over Europe, in the USA and in Australia.

I hope to continue judging both at home and abroad for many years to come as my way of giving something back to the Breed that is very dear to my heart.

Davis Hyde (Natterjack)

I own the Natterjack Kennel of Bearded Collies, and have owned Beardies since 1981.

I have judged the breed extensively having judged the Bearded Collie Club, Southern Counties Bearded Collie Club and Eastern Bearded Collie club shows, I have awarded tickets seven times in the breed in 1992, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2007 and 2008.

I have also judged in the Czech Republic (First UK judge to judge at a club show there)

Germany, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Luxembourg and Finland.

I am also judging the Czech Republic club centenary show in 2010 and also the Bearded Collie Club of Canada specialty in 2010.

I spent several years on the SCBCC committee with a spell as chairman.

I am also immensely proud to have produced three books on  the UK champions in the breed, the first two sold out and number three halfway there.

Being a small kennel I only breed occasionally but have produced several UK Champions and ticket winners and many overseas champions.

Wendy Knowles (Tonwynde)

It is with great pleasure and a privilege for me to be able to judge Bearded Collies at championship level after 20 years.  Our first Beardie was Champion Flosswood Rum Punch who was a wonderful show dog for us and gained many awards. Spinningdale Silver Sunset at Tonwynde also gained one CC, and Haylane High Society at Tonwynde proved himself by gaining his Stud Book number, as a veteran he also did well as did his sire (Ch. Flosswood Rum Punch). As we no longer own any dogs I want to spend my time enjoying the breed, which I hope to do by judging and observing how different lines hopefully are strengthened by breeders in this country, I believe our Beardies are very sought after around the world.

Jean Lanning (Clausentum)

Since her schoolgirl years, the world of dogs has been her great passion, and many years of successful showing & breeding have been accompanied by her career as a judge. Her success in the show ring came with Great Danes, although she has had a number of different breeds. With her mother was also involved in a large boarding kennel.

Served on the KC General Committee & several KC sub-committees.

I have judged many times at Crufts, including Groups & BIS in 2005. Also judged in over 40 different countries of the world.

Judged Bearded Collie Bitches in Crufts 2000.

Margaret MacDonald-Cross (Tarskavaig)

I went to live on the Isle of Skye in 1960 and established the Tarskavaig Kennel of Skye Terriers there. I bought my first Beardie bitch in 1964 sired by Mary Partridge’s dog Wisahnger Cairnbahn. She was called Tarskavaig Shady Lady. This began a lifelong association with the breed. I then had a blue dog from the Osmart kennel who was litter brother to Osmart Bonnie Blue Braid, called Blue Ribbon, whom I campained to his title – no mean feat from the Isle of Skye as I did not drive and everything had to be done by train. He had the distinction of being the only Champion with a blue eye and a brown one. In 1973 when I left Skye and came to live in the Central belt of Scotland with Bob, we lived next door to Nick and Nell Broadbridge (Sallen) and became even more involved in the breed. During this period we set in motion, Nick, Bob and I, the beginnings of the Bearded Collie Club of Scotland and are both founder members. Since that time I have held the office of Chair and Vice-Chair and am at present a member of the Judges Sub-Committee. I first judged the breed in 1973 at the Scottish Breeds Club and was privileged to judge the first ever Open Show of the Southern Counties Bearded Collie Club in 1977. I have judged the breed in Scandinavia and Australia and in 1981 judged Dogs at the BCC in Leicester and in 1998 did Beardie Dogs at Crufts. I have awarded CCs since 1966 to Skye Terriers and since 1980 to Bearded Collies. I also award CCs in Boxers which was my original breed, having shown my first Boxer at The Kelvin Hall, Glasgow in 1956. It is always a great honour to judge a Club show and none more so than the parent club of your breed.

Don Moir (Winaria)

I have owned beardies since April 1981 and originally never intended to show. However our first Beardie, Dramesk Winter Dusk (Misty), dragged us into it after a visit back to her breeder when she was about 4 months old. Misty was the foundation of Winaria and indeed our affix is made up of part of her name and part of the name of her daughter from her first litter. In her second litter she produced us the bitch who would go on to become Ch Winaria Wellwisher.

Winaria has never bred a high number of litters but from those that we did, two further bitches managed to gain their titles (W. Welltravelled & W. Whisperer) making three bitch champions in three successive generations, an accomplishment of which we are very proud.

I first judged in 1984 and was approved to award CCs in 1998 and I can honestly say that I have enjoyed each occasion immensely. I have also been invited to judge in Holland, Sweden and Germany.

The Bearded Collie Club Ch show is one of the trips that I remember most about our first year in showing and from then onwards has always held a special place. I was honoured to be selected to be referee in 2006 and would relish the opportunity to judge a full entry of dogs at this special show.

Sue Nicholls-Ward

I have owned Beardies since 1975, founding the Bumbleridge kennel in 1977 when Brambledale Black Bryony of Bumbleridge joined us. My first litter produced Bumbleridge Buckthorn in 1979. The second litter produced Bumbleridge’s Andromeda & Bumbleridge’s Moonmaiden who truly planted the Beardie bug.

In the early eighties I served with the Midland branch of the BCC and then eight years as a committee member of the main club as I wanted to give something back to our wonderful breed. For the last 7 years I have been chairman of the BCC.

I have had other breeds, which helps to give width to my knowledge both as a judge & an exhibitor but nothing will ever replace my Beardies. I currently have a Spanish Water Dog and I have judged these at National Gun Dog Championship show in August 2008.

I started my judging career in the early 1980’s & first gave CC’s in 1991; awarding CC’s in both sexes at 6 Championship shows & CC’s in a single sex at 4 Championship shows. The highlight of my judging career was in 2003 when that letter arrived from the KC inviting me to judge at Crufts in 2008. I had 154 dogs making an entry of 181; the largest Class being Open dog with 33 entered.

Since the mid 1990’s, I have also had the honour of judging at the Bearded Collie Club championship shows in Norway, Germany & twice in Sweden and judged in Spain in 2008.

Caroline Nicholson (Shilstone)

Caroline has been involved with Bearded collies for the past 29 years establishing the Shilstone affix in 1981 in partnership with her husband Kevin.

The name Shilstone can be found included in several top kennels in the Beardie world, both here in the UK and abroad in Europe and in countries such as America and Australia, with many gaining not only their titles but also top dog in breed awards, as well as multiple BIS show awards at both breed and all breed shows.

In Australia Ch Shilstone Domination became the first Bearded Collie to gain his herding certificate in that country, something that they are very proud of.

Caroline first started judging in 1985, and has awarded CC's in Bearded Collies since 1999, since then she has had the immense pleasure and honour to have judged at Breed Club Shows in Slovakia, Sweden, France, Holland and the UK.

Glenda O’Connell (Atherleigh)

I got my first Beardie in 1983 after a spell showing OES in the 1970’s. She was a daughter of Blumber De Roos Erasmus & I bred my first litter from her in 1988. Hannah joined us in 1990 & a year later Skye, who went on to gain her title (Ch. Potterdale Phorget-me-Not). Since 1983 I have bred 7 litters. My first homebred Champion, Atherleigh Over the Rainbow JW, is top Brood Bitch for 2008 (BCC & Dog World). She is the dam to 6 individual CC winners, 3 of them Champions, namely Ch A Mahogany Moon, Ch A Rufus & Ch A Rainbows End, who gained her title whilst only 2 years old and in 3 weeks.

I started judging Beardies in 1993 at Open Show level, including Open Shows for the BCC & SCBCC. I awarded CC’s for the first time in March 2008. I love showing my Beardies & to judge them is such an honour.

Alog with husband Mark, I currently share my home with four Beardies, Lucy, Corrie, Daphne & Minnie.

Cath Parker (Osmart)

Beardies entered my life over 45 years ago.  My first CC appointment was in 1976 and since then appointments have included Breed Club Open and Championship Shows and the bitch classes at Crufts 1992.  Overseas judging has included Club and Championship Shows in Canada, Denmark, Sweden and Germany with a club match in America.

I have shown Skye Terriers since 1968 and awarded CCs within this breed since 1986, appointments have included Club Open and Championship Shows  and Crufts 1997.

I firmly believe in putting something back - I was Secretary of the Bearded Collie Club for a couple of years in the mid-1970s and Northern Branch Secretary for 9 years.  I serve on the Committee of the Skye Terrier Club  and also Secretary/Treasurer of Bury Sporting Terrier Association from 1981 and ongoing.  I became the Our Dogs’ Breed Note writer for Skye Terriers in 2000.

Angela Pedder (Caldermist)

Angela has owned Bearded Collies for 28 years having acquired her first Beardie “Basil” -  Calderlin Islay Mist, a “Braid” grandson from Dorothy Lindsay in 1981. She continued to enjoy her Beardies as companions until a friend persuaded her to enter her new puppy at a local limit show. Since then, Angela has either owned or bred 9 stud book qualifying dogs, a UK Champion, an Irish Champion, 3 additional CC and Reserve CC winners and 4 Junior Warrant winners. She has been an active committee member of the Northern Branch of the Bearded Collie Club for the past 12 years on behalf of which she has coordinated the Northern Bearded Collie training class and several successful educational seminars. Angela has judged over 300 Beardies throughout the UK and in Ireland including two breed club open shows. Together with her husband George, Angela currently shares her life with 6 Beardies and 2 Portuguese Podengos and she is delighted to be included in the member’s ballot for consideration to judge the Bearded Collie Championship Show in 2013.

Hans Erik Pedersen (Shepherdess)

There have been dogs around me since childhood; my parents had different breeds from Saint Bernhard to Danish/Swedish Farm dog.

When I established my own family my wife Karen and I decided to have a Bearded Collie(1982) and after a few years we started breeding from them under the prefix Shepherdess, I have not bred a big number of Beardies, only when wanting one myself, the best known dogs we have bred/owned is: Ch. Shilstone Diplomat, Ch Potterdale Phoenix, Ch. Shepherdess Bix Beiderbecke and Ch. Shepherdess Sweet Sue Just You,

In 1994 I was authorized within F.C.I. as judge for Bearded Collies, and have judged them in many places in Europe including Scotland 2005, I am now approved for all breeds in F.C.I group 1 and another 9 in group 2 & 9.

Haydn Platts (Camberwick)

I have owned and showed Bearded Collies since 1985. Claire and I have campaigned 2 show dogs to their titles, one of which was homebred. We seldom breed, only 3 litters in 20 years. I have been involved in the working side of the breed, successful at obedience, pentathlon and qualifying one of our dogs for her senior working test.

My judging career has spanned 18 years, I have judged BIS several times at all breed Open shows and have awarded CC’s in Bearded Collies at home and abroad.

I consider myself a good judge of a dog, I appreciate good movement and type. I always aim to be fair, consistent and honest in my appraisal of all exhibits.

Francis Richards (Elemark)

I got my first Beardie in 1979 and began showing my second one ( Wildan Sunset Isles) in 1981.

I bred my first litter in 1988 &have since bred 4 other litters. Elemark Woodruff from my secnd litter won 1CC, 1 RCC 7 a Junior Warrant. I made up Layla, Ch. Odderwood Godetia at Elemark JW who has 5CC’s & was bred by Gill Yeates. There are currently 3 Beardie bitches at home, Layla, her daughter Berry & her daughter Rosa & 1 Australian Shepherd male, now 13 years. I have never had more than 5 dogs at any one time.

I began judging in 1990 & first awarded CC’s in 2006 at Midshires BCC show, dogs only. I also judge other breeds in the Pastoral Group & am contracted to judge Australian Shepherds with a single set of CC’s at Leeds 2009 & to judge bitches at the Midland Border Collie Club Open show in October 2009.

I am Vice-Chair & Trophy Steward for the EBCA.

Cath Ryan (Razkal)

I obtained my first Beardie from Nick Broadbridge in 1978. Afetr taking her along to obedience classes I tried my hand at Open obedience shows for a few years. I was lucky enough to gain the BCC Senior Working Test with Rags.

In 1980 I visited Liz & Billy Gault & bought my first show Beardie, namely Tosh (Lochbarra Copper Beech). That was me well & truly bitten by the proverbial show bug! Then in 1999 I made up my lovely boy Micky (Ch Chanderly Magic Sensation for Razkal).

I awarded CC’s for the first time at SKC in 2001 & I have had the privilege to judge at the EBCA Championship show & the Working & Pastoral Breeds of Scotland Championship show. I have also been invited to judge at Border Union Champ show.

Apart from showing I have assisted in the set up of the SKC championship show twice a year for the last 15 years.

Although not actively showing at the moment I am hoping to return to the show scene in the near future.

Eileen Segui (Arranbourne)

I met my first Bearded Collie puppy at Dog Club in 1970, & had to have one!

In May 1971 after seeing an advert from Jeni Cooke (now Wiggins) in DTW I soon became the proud owner of Scapafield the Embers Glow, a beautiful brown bitch , that I originally wanted to work in Open obedience competition.

I started to show in 1974 and became well & truly bitten by the bug.

Shanie was my foundation bitch for the Arranbourne affix of which A Birgitta was the first to carry it. I have bred 12 Beardie litters to date & have made up 3 homebred Champions.

I first awarded CC’s in 1985 & the last time was at SKC in May 2008, one of the highlights of my judging career was judging Bitches at Crufts 2003.

I have also  judged in Germany, Holland and Sweden, & have always enjoyed it, almost as much as showing my own dogs. Sadly I do not show Beardies much these days with knee problems, but they will always be my first love!

Gill Shrimpton (Robita)

I bought my first Beardie a blue bitch in 1973 from Trudi Wheeler, her name was cannamoor Honey Dew. In 1976 she was mated to Joyce Collis’s Ch Davealex Royle Baron, which produced 6 puppies, from which I kept a brown, bitch, she was Robita Sweet Emma and that was the start of the Robita line.

I have bred champions & Stud Book qualifiers in this country & abroad.

Ch Robita’s Dylan Thomas, a lovely dark brown, masculine dog, with an excellent temperament, was used by many well known breeders & appears in the pedigrees of many of the top winning dogs in the show ring today.

I judged my first Championship show in 1991, it was Scottish Breeds, since then I have judged many more, in this country & abroad, namely Finland, Germany & Sweden.

Geoff Spurrier

When Linda and I married we decided to make dogs our family before the children came along, and purchased our first Beardie, Tambora’s Brown Sugar at Geliland, after seeing Margaret Osborne award Ch Osmart Bonnie Blue Braid BOB at Crufts in 1972. Brown Sugar was bred by Jackie Tidmarsh from Braid ex Ch Edelweiss of Tambora.

After having reasonable success in the showring with Brown Sugar, we showed two of his

grandchildren, both of whom gained RCCs. Another became an American Champion (Ch Geliland Black Bawbee at Chaniam) who went BIS all breeds, and another a Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian Champion (Ch Geliland Morning Miracle).

Our first homebred Champion was ‘Disney’, Ch Geliland Star of the Screen, who sired two English and two Irish Champions.

We are currently showing Breeze (Ch Geliland Sea Breeze), a Disney great grandson who, as well as having great success in the ring, being the top Beardie in the UK for 2007 & 2008 and winning the Tambora trophy, has also qualified as a PAT dog.

I first judged Beardies in the 1980s, was approved to award CCs in 1992 and awarded my first set of CCs in 1993. I am also a Life Member of the Bearded Collie Club.

Outside of dogs one of my hobbies is raising money for charity and I am authorised by Teenage Cancer Trust to hold fundraising events on their behalf.

Alan Stevens (Whistbrae)

I have owned Bearded Collies since 1978 and have made up 3 UK champions, 2 of which are homebred. In addition to the champions here I have bred dogs that have gained titles in various European countries and several that have been awarded CCs or stud book numbers in the UK. I have awarded CCs in the breed several times, including officiating at the Club championship show, and have also judged the breed in Europe. I am also approved to award CCs in my second breed, Portuguese Water Dogs.

Mick Taylor (Bruernsih)

My wife and I have had an interest in Beardies for over 30 years, and have owned and shown them since 1980, having made up a Champion who gained BOB at Crufts, & have qualified 7 Beardies for the KC Stud book.

I first judged them in 1984, and awarded CC’s for the first time in 1996, and have judged them on a regular basis both here and overseas since then.

I also award CC’s in Polish Lowland Sheepdogs and was honoured to judge them at Crufts in 2005 with, as yet, a record entry.

It has been my good fortune over the years to have been asked to judge most other Pastoral & Working Breeds at Open show level, as well as both Groups & Best in Show.

I am currently on the A3 list for Australian Shepherds & Border Collies and B lists for Old English Sheepdogs, Rough Collies, Pulis, Briards, Shetland Sheepdogs & Bernese Mountain Dogs.

I always enjoy judging these, and other breeds in the Pastoral & Working Groups, but Beardies are, and always will be, my first love.

Sandra Taylor (Bruernish

I have been judging Beardies since 1984 & first awarded CC’s at the EBCA in 1997.

I have since judged at four General Championship shows.

In partnership with my husband we registered our Bruernish affix in 1982 and have subsequently bred four litters including a CC winner. We now share our lives with two Beardies from our last litter almost 15 years ago who we are pleased to say still carry the Davealex lines we began with 30 years ago.

The ‘highlight’ of our showing days was being shortlisted in the then Working & Pastoral Group at Crufts in 1987 after taking BOB with Ch Davealex Royle Bianco at Bruernish.

I have been involved with Committee work on three Bearded Collie Clubs and have edited various Club magazines. I am also on the A3 list of the Powlish Lowland Club & am delighted to say I have been asked to judge at their Silver Anniversary Open show next year.

We have ‘co-habited’ with twelve Beardies over the years and I feel privileged to have known them all.

Justine Waldron (Snowmead)

In conjunction with my mother I have been involved in Bearded Collies since 1982, having a  separate interest in the Snowmead affix. As a partnership our achievements include 16 Junior Warrant winners, 30 dogs bred/owned qualified for the Kennel Club Stud book, 17 dogs bred or owned with CC’s or RCC’s including 5 Champions, with, Ch Snowmead Sans Faute JW being top puppy in 2001 and top Bearded Collie in 2003 with 17 CC’s, 14 BOB’s, 13 RCC’s and has been BIS at the BCC Ch show, EBCA Ch Show, NEBCC Ch Show and BOS at the BCCS. His mother Ch J’aime de Chester at Snowmead was imported under the Bali directive and is a daughter of our Snowmead Superstition. She was top bitch in the breed in 1997 and top brood in 2004. With my mothers untimely death in 2000, I have taken complete responsibility for the Snowmead dogs. We currently share our lives with 10 Beardies at Snowmead ranging in age from 15 years to 2years.

Our first Beardie Penliza’s Teasel was Our Dogs/Pedigree Top Sire in 1991, with one of his sons becoming a Champion. We also bred the Our Dogs/Pedigree Top puppy for 1994, bred/own the Our Dogs/Pedigree Top puppy 2001 and bred/own the Dog World/Pedigree Top Dog for 2003 and own the Our Dogs Top brood for 2004.

I have handled numerous dogs for people with success as well as our own dogs, including stud book numbers, Crufts qualifiers and have handled 8 dogs to CC’s, campaigning 5 of these to Champions.

My first judging appointment was in 1990, and I have awarded CC’s in the UK, Sweden, France and America
