The Judges' Sub-Committee normally meet twice a year. Forms for consideration of individuals for inclusion on the Judges List and a questionnaire for applicants can be downloaded from the Club Downloads page.
Application and Approval Process for inclusion on the Bearded Collie Club Judges Lists
The Bearded Collie Club produces a List of Judges each year to indicate to interested parties the people that the Club would support at different levels of judging. The Judges List is currently divided into five parts: A1, A2, A3, B and C* in line with Kennel Club criteria. This page explains how the judges’ approval process works, and what to do if you would like to be included on the Bearded Collie Club's Show Judges List.
* - NB. In line with the Judges Education Programme (JEP), applications are no longer being accepted for the ‘C’ List which was made redundant from 1st January 2023.
Judges Approval Process
Anyone wanting to be included on the list must first satisfy the relevant criteria for judging at the appropriate level, as set out in the Club's Judging Criteria. The criteria are designed to enable progression up a judging list from Open Show level to Championship Show level over a number of years.
The Club welcomes applications from people at whatever level, recognising that everyone has to start somewhere. Membership of the Bearded Collie Club is not a prerequisite for inclusion in the lists.
The Bearded Collie Club’s Judges List is compiled by a Judges Sub-Committee (JSC) which meets twice a year. The Judges Sub-Committee constitution is available to read by clicking here.
Applying for Inclusion on the List
If you want to apply for the A or B judging lists, you must complete a Bearded Collie Club 'Judges List Questionnaire'. Questionnaires are available from the Club Secretary or from the Downloads section of the Club's website.
Completed questionnaires and all supporting document and copies of certificates must be sent to the JSC Secretary. If your certificates are not included your application may be rejected.
How the Process Works
The Sub-Committee will normally meet twice a year to consider applications for inclusion on the List. Meeting dates will be confirmed by the JSC Secretary and posted on the Club website, or you can contact the JSC Secretary.
Applications may be received by the JSC Secretary at any time but at least two weeks before the relevant JSC meeting so that they can be circulated to JSC members.
The meeting Agenda may include other relevant business, such as the criteria for inclusion on the Judges List. Any member unable to attend may send their votes and comments to the JSC Secretary in advance of the meeting.
Applications are voted on by secret ballot at the meeting. A majority vote is needed to be included on the Judges List. Allocation to a particular list depends on the person meeting the various Judging Criteria as agreed by the Sub-Committee.
After the meeting the JSC Secretary will write to inform each applicant of the JSC’s decision on their application, and update the Judges List accordingly.
Process for judges awarding CCs for the first time
Show societies wishing to appoint a judge who will be awarding CCs for the first time must ask the prospective judge to complete a Kennel Club questionnaire. The form is sent via the Kennel Club to the Club Secretary to obtain the Club’s opinion, which is then taken into account in the KC approval process. The forms are circulated to the Judges Sub-Committee for their opinion. Each member will forward their opinion and vote to the Club Secretary who will complete the KC form appropriately. Copies of these responses will be held on file for inspection/reference.
Process for Assessment under the A2 Scheme
Applicants wanting to be included on the Club’s A2 list must submit evidence that they have successfully passed an examination/assessment at any Bearded Collie club breed specific seminar run in accordance with the relevant Kennel Club code of best practice. This is in addition to fulfilling all the requirements for the A3 list.
Review of Lists
Judges lists will be reviewed and updated by the JSC on an ongoing basis and in preparation for Judges to be included in the Club’s Ballots for Open and Championship Shows. Updated lists will be made available from the JSC Secretary. A list is sent to the Kennel Club as part of the Annual Returns.
Availability of Judges Lists and Criteria
The Club’s criteria for Judges are published in the Club Yearbook and on the Club website. The Judges Lists are available from the Club Secretary (email secretary@beardedcollieclub.co.uk) and appear in the Club Yearbook.
So that our Lists are as up to date as possible, and to ensure Judges are invited to enter ballots, the Bearded Collie Club asks that any changes to personal and contact details are sent to the Club Secretary.
The Club regularly organise A3 Assessments. Please contact the Club Secretary for any future plans.
