Working Tests - 24th May 2023
BCC East Anglia and South East Branch - Brampton, Suffolk
Judge: Jill Kevis
I would like to thank Ann Trodd and Jenny Salmon for inviting me to judge the Working Tests at their event. I spent a lovely day meeting Beardies and their owners. I judged most of the Intermediate Tests and one Senior.
The venue and setup were good. It was a great advantage not having races and sausages nearby! The weather was good, perhaps a bit too warm. The only minus was a thick layer of mown grass which was made for rolling in!
Intermediate
Ann Trodd with Cookie, Beardie cross. PASS
Cookie was a little distracted during heelwork though he can hold a very smart position. He lost some marks on the stop-on-recall and retrieve. He did a very quick search. Well done Cookie!
Jenny Salmon with Freddie, Beardie. Fail
Freddie was very close to passing this test but unfortunately would not stop on recall. He just needs to sharpen up on the other exercises eg fewer commands during heelwork. Good boy Freddie,
Vanessa Pooley with Elena, Beardie cross. PASS
This was a smart partnership with her Obedience training being demonstrated, only losing 2 marks for the test, She is nearly ready for the Senior Test just needing to learn some exercises. I am sure she will achieve this level, I enjoyed watching you both.
Senior
Jenny Salmon with Piper, Beardie. Fail
Unfortunately Piper was really distracted today particularly by the dry cut grass, being determined to roll at every opportunity. Attention was hard work for Jenny. Unfortunately he would not do the sendaway. On another day he will pass Jenny

Primary
Ann Trodd and Casey (Chelsasa Open secret)
Ann and Casey completed a very good test only dropping 3 marks for a slightly tight lead on the food refusal and a lively wait for the held recall. Casey is a keen and enthusiastic worker who gives excellent focus and attention for his very young age. Pass 97/100
Connie Yates and Maud (Chelsasa One of a Kind)
Maud completed a lovely calm test showing good attention and was very responsive to Connie’s requests, gaining full marks in each exercise. Maud is unfamiliar with heel work, but kept a good position next to Connie and just needs to learn to sit at halts. She has great potential for training. Pass 100/100
Junior
Anne Buswell and Quince (Corimist Soul Legend of Scotesham)
Quince completed a basically accurate test just losing a few marks here and there when he became distracted. He is quite a vocal worker, but this reflects his enthusiasm for life, and when he settled and focussed his heel work was lovely to watch. He took a while deciding to retrieve the dumbbell, but his delivery to hand was good. Continue to work on this for Intermediate. Pass 91/100
Intermediate
Anne Buswell and Bramley (Douglasdale Garanthus at Scotesham)
Bramley completed a very accurate test in some style. His heel work was very consistent at each pace, he ignored distractions, just going a little wide at times. He completed all the other tasks really well with a great retrieve and really used his brain to seek the article. He just lost marks for anticipation in the stop and dropping the article in the seek back. Well done, Senior next! Pass 95/100

I would like to congratulate the branch committee for all their efforts on their Fun Day, with a fabulous afternoon tea of scones and all the trimmings. The weather was very kind, no rain in sight so I'm not sure why the numbers were a little low. I had the pleasure of judging the working tests which we fitted in around the Fun Dog Show. This was a true demonstration that all our Beardies have a brain and I am pleased to say they all passed and received the appropriate certificates for either Primary, Junior or Senior. The Working Tests are not competitive with the others taking the test but need to show a good team work of handler and dog to achieve a minimum of 80% on each element.
Primary Test
Sally Barnaby and Bubbles (unregistered Beardie) Worked very well in their heelwork and recall; not quite as settled in the stay or being handled for the examination by a stranger.
Angela Butler and Cloughie (Ceilmear Be Good At Baxilby), handled by Anne Mills Very good team work with Cloughie totally focused on Anne, only dropping a point on two of the exercises. Hopefully will progress to the higher tests.
Angela Butler and Dillon (Ceilmear Malt Teaser at Baxilby), handled by Anne Mills, again another very good round, the only distraction Dillon found was some food which he ignored on command, just costing him a couple of points on an almost full score. Again, hopefully will progress to the higher tests.
Christine Campbell and Ailean (Croftcaileag Aileanna) Just did enough for the test thanks to the Beardie brain of Ailean. Will look forward to watching the team progress.
Liz Middleton and Ziggy (unregistered Beardie) Ziggy was very happy to be examined but less happy when Liz was not as close which is probably why her recall was so perfect and her heel work nice and clean. Look forward to watching the team progress.
Junior Test
Sally Barnaby and Inca (unregistered Beardie) What a pleasure it was to watch this team work achieving full marks on all but the examination, which was good enough. Hopefully will now progress to the higher tests.
Senior Test
Maureen Sale and Misty (Ch Potterdale Platinum Star JW) What can I say but what a pleasure it was to watch this team work. The fact that Misty had to wait until near the end to work definitely didn’t show in this eight-year-old lady remembering all she had learnt before. Misty is a true representative of a Beardie that definitely has brains as well as beauty: I believe that Misty is now the nineth show champion to achieve the Bearded Collie Senior Working Test.
